Of Milk and Strong Meat

“Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing.

For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.

For every one that useth milk is unskillful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.

But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.”

(Hebrews 5:11-14)

Here is a rebuke to those who are slothful in their hearing and reading of the gospel, and therefore they as Christians have not been growing in maturity. As a result that person cannot teach scripture, as is our duty as Christians. In 1 Peter 4: 10-11: “As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.

If any man speak let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.”

We see a lazy person not knowing scripture could not do what is written here in 1 Peter 4:10-11. This is a warning to Christians that don’t do the work in learning God’s words, to stop being a babe and to grow and be mature in your faith.

Another way of looking at this is: God sees our hearts and knows if you are a babe in your faith or if you are fully mature and walk in the word. Remember one day you and I will have to give an account to God of what you and I have done with His Word, so be faithful.

All Glory to God
